Home to the Hobart Repertory Society, this theater, with tasteful decor and a welcoming intimacy, is next door to the State Library. Hobart Repertory Theatre has been entertaining Tasmanian audiences since 1926 with quality productions at a low cost. The society is noted for its detailed stage display and the productions provide a challenging and satisfying experience for the actors as well as the audience. There are two tiers of seating with wheelchair access to the stalls. Current and forthcoming productions are advertised in the local newspaper.
In the heart of Hobart, there is one place where one ought to head for some excellent live music, and that place is The Grand Poobah. Taking its name from the character Pooh-Bah from the comic opera The Mikado, and which is generally used to refer to someone of high importance, The Grand Poobah holds an esteemed position in the music and art circles of the city. Opened as The Strand in 1916, it changed its name to The Odeon Theatre in 1956. This grand venue closed down as a cinema hall in 1970 and was the performance venue for the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra till 1998. It was home to the Christian City Church until 2011. Today it hosts occasional concerts and shows though plans to convert into a retail high-rise has been in the pipeline for sometime now.
The appropriately named Backspace is found behind Theatre Royal and was an area originally left unfinished due to lack of funding. However in 1982 its promise as an alternative performance venue was recognized. With enthusiasm, hard work and very little money, the space was transformed into an intimate theater with seating for up to 200. Backspace has launched many theater companies and shows.
Built in 1837, Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest theater and a fine example of Victorian "bijou" architecture. It has survived old age, fire and public criticism and has been beautifully remodeled and restored. The auditorium, with its impressive central dome, gilt decoration, rich colors and intricate moldings is the crowning achievement. Backstage has been fully modernized with technology capable of theatrical wizardry. Originally offering entertainment ranging from music hall to cock fights, it now offers a year-round program of theater and performance.
Situated in the city's central business district, this complex offers seven screens and a wide variety of films to suit all ages and tastes. Tuesday is "cheap ticket" day. Intensity upstairs offers pinball machines and games, and this area of whirl and swirl can be booked for a Saturday Super Session for two hours. With state-of-the-art audio visual facilities, the Hobart City Hall is one of the premier event venues for conferences, congresses, trade meetings, private parties, community events and international music concerts. The main hall and gallery together can hold up to 1240 people at one time comfortably and if the need arises, the main hall seating can be removed to make more space. The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra happily housed in Federation Concert Hall, gives Tasmania its largest purpose-built convention facility. The Concert Hall has tiered seating for 1100 people and was opened in 2001. Attached to the Hotel Grand Chancellor, the reality of the building owes a great deal to the enterprise of the hotel owners. bar, dining and parking facilities are all available at the Hotel.
A non-profit organization operating since 50 years, Hobart Police & Community Youth Club provides a host of community services for the youth and the community in Hobart. Activities like gymnastics, courses in self defense and weight-training are available at minimized rates. The activities are organized by the volunteers and members themselves. They also offer facilities for kids like Kindergym and Gymfun classes.
The White Pavilion stands on the lush green lawns outside the Parliament House, in the center of Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. It holds inventions that are based on designs created by Da Vinci, which are brought to life by the Artisans of Florence. Located close to Hobart's waterfront area, it offers stunning views that are simply unparalleled. Its interiors are well-done complete with opulent chandeliers and fine furnishings; seating arrangement can be altered depending on the requirements of the event organizers. The Hobart Function and Conference Centre is located on a pier over the stunning Hobart waterfront.
