Covering a vast area, and quite imaginatively organized, this public park is a major attraction in Hamilton. There are five garden collections explaining and portraying varied aspects of garden traditions, historic representations of relationship of people with plants. The cafe and restaurant inside the park are quite refreshing. A large number of tourists visit Hamilton Gardens throughout the year and a lot of interesting events are held as well. The park is free for every one and visiting time is different for each section and varies seasonally. Check the website for further details.
Hamilton Zoo's aim is to be recognized as a conservation zoo and as such it participates in the Australasian Species Management Programmes, which include breeding programs for endangered species. The zoo currently has more than 550 New Zealand and exotic animals housed in the open air and in natural habitats wherever possible. The park covers 35 hectares and has extensive collections of native trees and shrubs as well as the largest aviary in the Southern Hemisphere. Snacks and light lunches are available at the cleverly named 'Moa's Ark Café'.
