Brightly lit interiors, good coffee and art, Fred promises you all this and much more! This space, done entirely in white, is a real visual treat given the exotic art on the walls and the quaint bar. »Gus' Pub & Grill

Don't let the small interiors and cramped look of the Gus' Pub & Grill keep you from having the most rocking experience of your life! That's because this pub is reputed to be one of the best places to hang out at Halifax, if what you're looking for is to guzzle down some freely flowing drinks while you head bang to some extreme death metal, alternative rock, black metal, and other brutal sounds. Some of the best indie bands frequently perform to a wildly cheering North End audience at this venue.

»Athens Restaurant

If you're in the west end of the city and longing for a taste of Greece, dine at the Athens Restaurant. The cooks serve up tasty dishes, reasonably priced, and the plates are full. Your meal begins with a loaf of crusty bread and your choices of what follows are many: Spanikopita, perhaps, Souvlakia.  The decor is interesting with the entire wall painted in a mural that might make you forget the winter when you dine there in January.

»The Company House

The Company House opened in January 2009 and has already gained an impetus in the live music entertainment scene in the North End area of Halifax. With a capacity of 150 people, this venue is the place to visit if you want to check out performances by well-known bands, upcoming local musicians, or even top notch North American bands. Owned and managed by Mary-Ann Daye, this place is a haven for all music enthusiasts in the city. The Company House is open from Wednesdays to Saturday from 2p onwards. This place also serves herbal tea and fair trade coffee in the afternoons, and a variety of drinks in the evenings. »Highlife Cafe

Here is a great little place for a meal, from breakfast to dinner. The decor invites exploration and you'll be hopping up from the table now and then for a closer look at the drums, or perhaps or the beautiful suit for sale and hanging in the corner. The food is delicious African cuisine that will transport you straight to the deserts of the continent even while in the chilly weather of Canada. Try the curried chicken and beef stew or, for the vegetarians, plantain and rice. Portions are generous and the fire from the hot sauce can be quenched with a bit of mango juice if you go overboard.

Escargot is not really considered seafood in Halifax, and this restaurant in the Citadel Hotel, is one of a few that offers the delicious little mollusks. Those seeking lighter fare will be pleasantly surprised by the lobster salad which contains lobster meat and fresh sliced mango atop exotic greens. Heartier eaters will find lamb Evangeline a treat which is essentially a boneless rack of lamb on a bed of spinach. The room at botaniCa Restaurant and Lounge sports tablecloths with warm earth tones under subdued lighting. Comfort is the key here and the serving staff is alert and friendly.
