Gustav Adolf's Square is located in the city center, next to Brunnsparken. The square is the administrative and political center of Gothenburg. You will find the old and new Town Halls, the House of Estates and the Stock Exchange around the square. A statue of king Gustav II Adolf, founder of Gothenburg, stands in the middle of the square. Until the 1850s, the square functioned as a large marketplace, and was then named Stora Torget (the Main Square). The market moved, under great protests, to Kungstorget behind Kungportsplatsen. Just below Gustav Adolf's Square there used to be a fish market, but that moved to Rosenlunskanalen in the same decade.
