Bars & Cafes
Whether you're in the mood for ice cream and cakes, espresso and coffee, or an Italian meal, Café Italia is the place for you. Aside from the range of foods and drinks, you'll truly enjoy the location right on the water with views of the harbor and river. Inside is a quite a sight too: you'll be greeted with a replication of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel painting.
A semla is a cream bun with almond paste, and one of the best places to have them is at Konditori Chapmans Torg. Supposedly during Lent, but actually the entire winter, semlor features on any café menu. You can also buy excellent bread here, and the usual pastries and cakes.
The name Hängmattan (Hammock), comes from the shape of the street outside, sloping upwards at both ends towards Stigbergstorget and Chapmans Torg. At this café you can get sandwiches for a fair price. If you are in luck, you can also get to see an exhibition or some live music. The rest of the building houses rehearsal halls and a stage. The visitors to the café are often rehearsing musicians.
Columbus is something as unusual as a café that is both hip and popular with ordinary people. Here you will find a combination of prams and young, well-travelled people of the kind that you find at café Zenit, further up the road. The café can be crowded, especially before noon on weekends, but if you get a seat you can look forward to very good cinnamon or vanilla buns, or maybe a warm goat's cheese sandwich. To get here, take trams 3 or 9 to Kaptensgatan.
Starting off in a building that was a girls school till the late nineteen hundreds, Musikens Hus, is a now place for live music and food. It was taken over by the administration wing of the municipal as a center for cultural activities involving the youth in the early 80's. The house involves the young blood of Gothenburg through musical performances that take place here. The concert hall here has cloak rooms and facilities for performances. The place aims at giving good music, food and drinks to its patrons.
At the intersection of Danska vägen and Allmänna vägen you will find the oldest wooden house in Gothenburg, along with the heritage-listed buildings of Gatenhielmska reservatet and Zenit Kafé. Zenit is the place to go for breakfast. All day long, you can get trays filled with toast, olives, lettuce, mustard, juice, onions, marmalade, and more. And they have a good selection of teas. The interior is simple and international, and the guests seem, in some strange way, to have all come back from India or South America. Trams 3, 4 and 9 go to Stigbergstorget.
Unlike any bowling alley or bar you've been to before, Inter Bowling Majorna is the place for "disco bowling," which is basically bowling with booze, music and lots of colors. Don't be turned off by the bowling aspect: there is a full bar so coming here is just a unique night out. This is also a great place for parties and there are a variety of packages you can choose from.
Showdown is located on the rooftop of Henriksberg. This club is known for hosting stage performances by popular artists and local bands. Saturday special includes rock 'n' roll and pop 'n' punk. Ardent fans of Rolling Stones, New York Dolls, Ramones, Babyshambles and New Bomb Turks would love this club, for it entertains the guests with this genre of music. If you are looking forward to relax with friends and enjoy some great music, this is a place to be.
Kafé Marmelad has its own unique style with three floors that includes a cozy basement that is especially popular during the winter months. The old fashioned light bulbs and radios that decorate the space, as well as the small rooms, gives the whole place a 1930s, jazzy feeling. You can also get some tasty bites like a variety of sandwiches on Ciabatta, lasagna, soups and salads. If you're not hungry, this is also a great place to grab a coffee or a drink.
Haket is a place for great food and excellent brews. The place is always buzzing with crowds thronging for the wide choice of eats on offer. The menu is an exhaustive list of Japanese delicacies, but you will find burgers and fries here too (in the bar menu). Local and international beers, Scotch whiskies, vegetarian dishes, innovative desserts, and a great time are the other reasons why you should visit Haket.
It's all about the live performances here at Mitt Andra Hem with new and original acts almost every night of the week. Whether you're on stage or sipping a drink, this bar, which translates to My Second Home, has a comfortable atmosphere and cozy vibe. Be sure to try the beer as they have their own micro brew here. Though drinks are the focus, there is also a growing food menu for those looking for a snack.
Andra Långgatan is the address for this café featuring a disc jockey. And even when there is no DJ playing, the music is chosen with more care than at your average place. It feels very natural for this to be a music café, since it is located next to a DJ record shop and not far from Scandinavia's largest record store, Skivhugget. There are also some second-hand record shops in the area. At the café, many of the guests can be observed sitting with newly bought records next to their coffee cups.
