Hambone's is a casual restaurant that serves American cuisine and hometown favorites. Patrons will get a small taste of the food that Pittsburghers have grown up eating. The menu is filled with burgers, sandwiches, soups and stews (a favorite is the turtle soup). The food may not be gourmet cuisine but it is good and very filling. There is a fully stocked bar, a dance floor and occasional live entertainment.
Thunderbird Cafe is as unique as its name is. A live music venue-cum-bar-cum-restaurant, Thunderbird is a perfect blend of great food, good music and a rocking atmosphere. From the moment you step in, you'll find yourself drawn towards the dance floor, what with the live bands rocking the night away! The three-leveled lounge has an upfront bar and a pool table on the first level and two large television sets on the next level. Further up, there is a small stage where you will find bands performing everything from jazz to blues and Americana music. There is ample seating space all around the bar and the stage is visible from everywhere. While grooving to the music, make sure you grab a bite of the burgers and the absolutely delectable barbecue dishes that the restaurant offers.
The Bloomfield Bridge Tavern prides itself on being a family place. Foul language is not tolerated behind these doors. Known as BBT, the tavern hosts live bands that play everything from polka to rock music. Tuesdays are open stage night while Wednesdays feature acoustic music and poetry. Bands play Fridays and Saturdays. The cover charge ranges from $2 to $5. The kitchen serves up traditional Polish food and the typical bar fare.
Originally, the 31st Street Pub catered to mill workers who would stop by for a beer after a hard day at work. Before long, bikers had taken over the bar. These days, the pub caters to fans of indie rock and experimental music. The stage area still has the skulls that decorated the infamous Skull Room during the biker days, but the crowd is a little more friendly now. Bands (such as Gagging Magots and Ninjas Who Met God) perform nightly Thursday through Saturday. Happy hour is from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.
Located behind Iron City Brewing, Donny's Place does not exactly fit its tough Polish Hill neighborhood. There are three bars and outdoor patios that feature rock water fountains and sculptures, and the dance floor is open on weekends, when DJs play a variety of music. Donny's centerpiece is Leather Central, a bar in the basement that features sectional seating separated by 55-gallon drum walls. This bar also hosts a variety of theme nights. The kitchen is open 6p-Mid and serves American cuisine, such as burgers, hotdogs and tuna salad.
Located in Shadyside, Buffalo Blues was recently voted as having the best wings in Pittsburgh. You'll understand the vote after tasting some of the 13 special sauces, ranging from sweet to "Hotter 'n Hell." In addition, the menu features a variety of sandwiches, ribs and salads. Swordfish and catfish are also favorites. On the weekends, either a DJ or a band performs. Music ranges from blues to reggae to classic rock and roll. There are also some pool tables for those who need more than wings and a beer to occupy their night.
CJ's is a popular restaurant and lounge in the Strip District. The kitchen turns out American dishes like pork chops, burgers, chicken wings, sandwiches, wraps and salads. CJ's features a variety of events throughout the week, including karaoke nights, DJ sessions and live music. For for an energetic atmosphere, generous portions, tasty drinks and great entertainment, make sure to stop by CJ's.
The Windhaven Lounge offers live music as well as a DJ spinning the latest in hip-hop/rap, jazz and rock. Karaoke is also a popular entertainment. American cuisine is served for lunch and dinner. Think sandwiches and soups. Specials are offered every Monday night, especially during Monday Night Football. Happy hour is Fridays from 4p to 6p. The lounge also has a pool table.
Club Havana was into swing bands and Latin music before they ever became the "in" thing. Their DJs play Latin and salsa music every night from 10p-2a. Merengue dancing lessons are available Sundays from 8p-10p. The club has a full martini bar and a humidor, so the place is usually filled with cigar smoke, albeit not from real Cuban cigars.
Penn Brewery prides itself on offering Pittsburghers authentic German brews and cuisine. The brewery adheres to the strict German law Reinheitsgebot, which was enacted in 1516 to ensure the purity of beer. The historic building uses huge kettles that were made in Germany to mix the four ingredients that make perfect beer. The menu features German favorites such as Paprika Huehnchen and Sauerbraten. Live music is offered throughout the week. Happy Hour is M-Th from 5p-7p, with a different beer style available for just $2 per pint each day.
