North Park is the largest park in Allegheny County. The 3,010 acres have everything from a golf course to tennis courts to an ice-skating rink. The swimming pool is one of the largest in the world. The boathouse offers easy access to the lake, which everyone agrees has some of the best fishing in the state and the Latodami Nature Center is staffed by a full-time naturalist. Most of the park's buildings were built during the Depression as part of federal programs.
Beechwood Farms is the perfect stop for nature lovers. The wildlife reserve has an abundant wildlife population living on 134 acres. There are also five miles of trails for hikers, which are open from dawn to dusk all year. The educational center offers classes and summer camp for kids. Admission to the farm is free.
The North Hills Art Center almost seems out of place amidst the businesses that line Babcock Blvd. The store may be small, but it features a large selection of artwork by local artists. The pieces are affordable for the average collector. The center also has educational programs for children and adults, as well as monthly exhibits.
Located near the Fox Chapel region of the city, the Fox Chapel Golf Club is a prestigious members-only club that offers fine dining and recreational sports and activities like golfing, swimming and tennis. Oakmont East Course is affiliated with the famous Oakmont Country Club, which occasionally hosts national golf tournaments. The Oakmont Country Club's prestigious golf course was designed by Henry Fownes and is considered to be one of the most difficult courses in the United States. This elegant club has hosted more editions of the U.S. Open - including the 2007 U.S. Open - than any other golf club. Visitors of the club can either enjoy prestigious golf tournaments or play themselves on its challenging holes.
Riverview Park sits on a hillside on the North Side of Pittsburgh. The park features a public pool, tennis courts, play areas and ball fields. The Allegheny Observatory, home to the University of Pittsburgh's 13-inch telescope, is also located here. The observatory is open to the public one day each October.
James Kelso Bible Lands Museum is located on Pittsburgh Theological Seminary's campus. The museum houses artifacts that have been found during archaeological digs in the Middle East; many are thousands of years old. The pottery and structural remains are all significant to in-depth Bible lessons. Tours are available year round, but reservations are required.
The Longue Vue Club and Golf Course is a historic site that features a beautiful Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals styles of architecture of the club and a huge place of grass beds that features the golf court. Visit the society, study different tricks of the trade and get to know suppliers of bonsai. The members of the society meet at the Pittsburgh Civic Garden Center every third Wednesday at 7p.
