The Baptistère Saint-Jean, also called Baptistery of St. John or the Temple of Saint John, is probably one of the oldest Christian structures in all of France. With architecture that reflects the Merovingian style, the building was first built in the 4th Century, and went through a number of structural changes thereafter. The more glamorous of those changes are the frescoes that cover the interior walls. Originally, baptism was supposed to take place at the River Clain which is about 100 meters from the baptistery. Later an indoor pool was created and the original octagonal pool that was used for immersions is also still preserved. The structure is also known to house what is probably a set of the oldest Romanesque-style murals in the country. Do call for details.
