Formerly known as Penwell Raceway and Penwell Knights Raceway, the Caprock Motorplex is a motor racing track. This is the only independent drag strip in the city and features exciting races. Opened in 1951, the Ector Theater is a one-screen theater upon which all the glitz and glamor, heartache and heartbreak of the big screen took place. Many years later, in 2001, under new ownership by the city of Odessa, it reopened and brings back the glory days of cinema. Often playing old classics, the theater also has live shows impersonating some of hottest bands from decades ago.
The brainchild of a high school teacher, the Globe of the Great Southwest is a replica of the theater in London at which Shakespeare's masterpieces were performed. An octagonal building with 418 seats, the intimate theater helps one to appreciate plays just like they were seen so many hundreds of years ago. On the same ground is a writer's garden including a labyrinth and a replica of Anne Hathaway's cottage which may be rented out for various purposes. Each month, the Brand New Opree presents a live country show at the Globe and a yearly Shakespeare Festival is held as well.
Located on the Odessa College campus, the Deaderick Auditorium is home to the Odessa College Music Department. This local auditorium seats 750 and is an excellent venue to catch a music or theater performance.
The Odessa theater guild was formed in 1939 and has since grown to inspire and enrich the community of the Permian Basin. Today the Permian Playhouse presents a full season of plays and musicals, as well as education/outreach programs to the future of the Permian Playhouse. Plays that are featured at the Permian Playhouse have included Grease, A Christmas Story, and The Wizard of Oz.
