Located in the village of Sletta, the Western Norway Emigration Center is a unique cultural museum in the form of an American township in Norway. Dedicated to the Norwegian immigrants to America and Canada, the museum consists of a church, school, medical clinic, a residential house, a teacher's home and a jail and town hall, brought to the village from places like Minnesota and North Dakota. Based on an idea by a local professor Asbjørn Odd Ystebø, the plan was only successful with the collaboration of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy of Minnesota and Dakota towns who volunteered to dismantle and ship the old historical buildings to Sletta. Today, the center is a popular tourist attraction and also holds events such as weddings, festivals and other cultural activities. Breheimsenteret is a museum and a visitors centers for Jostedalsbreen National Park. Opened in 1993, the museum building was burnt down by fire, and hence, in 2013 the building was restored and opened to public in 2013.
