    »Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts

    August 30, 2014 9:30 PM

Scott Weiland is a prolific singer/songwriter and musician from northern California who rose to fame as the lead singer of the alternative rock band Stone Temple Pilots. After meeting bassist Robert DeLeo in 1986, Weiland formed the band Mighty Joe Young with the additions of guitarist Dean DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz. The band signed with Atlandic Records and changed its name to Stone Temple Pilots, or STP. STP's 1992 debut album Core, featured several hits such as "Sex Type Thing and "Wicked Garden," making the band one of the most influential acts of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. The album, however, sparked comparisons to the music of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, which led to accusations that STP was cashing in on the popularity of the grunge scene. In the years following the spike in success, Weiland developed drug habits that prohibited the band from much of its 1996-1997 tour for its third album, Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop. Stone Temple Pilots went on a hiatus shortly after the failed album, and Weiland focused on developing his solo career. After spending time in jail during the end of the 1990s, he rejoined STP and the band released its 1999 album No. 4, before disbanding in 2003. The same year, Weiland was approached by bassist Duff McKagan to join a band with former Guns N' Roses band mates Slash and Matt Sorum as well as Dave Kushner. The five musicians soon formed Velvet Revolver and released Contraband in 2004 to critical and commercial acclaim. The album featured the song "Slither," which won Weiland a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal in 2005, marking the second time he received the award. Following a second album and a cancelled tour due to Weiland's erratic behavior, the tension between Weiland and the other Velvet Revolver members rose and forced the singer to leave the band. As a solo artist, Weiland released his first studio album in 1998and has since gone on to tour fairly regularly in support of his solo material as well as the songs he helped write with Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver.

    »Moe.down

    August 30, 2014

The jam band moe. has attracted a wide fan base (mainly on the East Coast) with experimental guitar excursions, oftentimes wacky lyrics and a penchant for attracting a party friendly crowd. The group's music often falls in the straightforward "rock" category, but the band also experiments with more modern influences; as well as old-timey folk and country traditions. The group found a perfect home for itself during the 1990s jam haze with other acts like Phish, Widespread Panic and The String Cheese Incident.

    »Araabmuzik

    August 31, 2014 8:00 PM

Developed in the late 1980s, the MPC is an electronic sampler that has worked its way up to near ubiquitous status in hip-hop, electronic and pop music. The instrument was originally designed as a glorified drum machine, but has since become an all-in-one rhythm track producer, sampler, loop station and sound manipulator, which has led to solo artists beginning to experiment with MPCs in a fashion similar to DJs' experimentation with turntables during the beginnings of hip-hop. One such solo artist is the Providence, Rhode Island-based, AraabMUZIK. With lightning quick hands, the producer creates mini hip-hop inspired jams full of diced up samples, rhythmic shifts and enough melodic sensibility to offer more than just sheer dexterous virtuosity.
