»Shakespeare Film Sampler: A 450th Birthday Tribute To The Bard

December 26, 2014 2:00 PM

Friday, December 26 2:00 pm Othello (1995, Directed by Oliver Parker, 123 min)  The evil Iago pretends to be friend of Othello in order to manipulate him to serve his own end. William Shakepeares Othello is a timeless story about race, love, jealousy and betrayal. Othello stars Laurence Fishburne as Othello, Irène Jacob as Desdemona, and Kenneth Branagh as Iago. This is the first cinematic reproduction of the play released by a major studio that casts anAfrican American actor to play the role of Othello .                 Saturday, December 27 12 pm King Lear (1971, Directed by Grigori Kozintzev, 139 min., Russian w/English Subtitles) Hailed as one of the best adaptations of this Shakespearean tragedy, Grigori Kozintsevs King Lear is a striking epic interpretation based on a translation by novelist Boris Pasternak and driven by a stirring score by composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Kozintsev transposed the setting to a sparse landscape of moors and marshes, which provides an eerie backdrop to the bare castles and roaming bands of ragged, destitute wanderers. Thin, frail Yuri Yarvets unique interpretation of the title role, in which he focuses on the kings suffering and pain, was internationally acclaimed. Kozintsev, a peer of Eisensteins who worked well into the 1960s, was a master of cinematic technique who finally achieved recognition at the end of his career for his stunning interpretations of Shakespeare. According to film historian Richard Dyer: "Paradoxically, the two most powerful films of Shakespeare plays [Hamlet and King Lear] were made not in Great Britain but in the Soviet Union." (Boston Globe) 2:30 pm   Julius Caesar(1953, Directed by Frank Mankiewicz, 120 min.)                      Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film adaptation of the play by Shakespeare, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who also wrote the uncredited screenplay, and produced by John Houseman. The original music score is by Miklós Rózsa. The film stars Marlon Brando as Mark Antony, James Mason as Brutus, John Gielgud as Cassius, Louis Calhern as Julius Caesar, Edmond O'Brien as Casca, Greer Garson as Calpurnia, and Deborah Kerr as Portia.   Discussion to follow each screening For more info call 203-946-7431 or email sgodfrey@nhfpl.org

December 26, 2014 9:00 PM

Stephen Kellogg is an alternative rock singer/songwriter from Boston, Massachusetts who rose to fame as the leader of the band Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers--affectionately known by fans as simply, SK6ERS. Kellogg and his band released several critically-acclaimed alternative rock albums since SK6ERS formed in 2003, in addition to several solo albums released prior. Although much of Kellogg's work in music has resulted from collaboration with others, particularly with his own band, there is no doubt that his exceptional ear for songwriting and performance remains the driving force behind the music's success.

»Joan Osborne

December 26, 2014 7:00 PM

Some blues singers have an ability to make listeners feel the pain and heartache that the musician was feeling at the very moment they wrote the pensive song about disparagement. Other blues vocalists, though, have a knack for providing listeners with a sense of hopeful optimism with their rather buoyant tunes. American chanteuse Joan Osbourne undoubtedly falls into this latter category. Getting her start in 1995 with her debut LP, Relish, Osbourne has managed to garner a good amount of critical acclaim for her bluesy voice and ability to write self-reflective lyrics that are typically tinged with idealism.
