»Bennett Place State Historic Site

This otherwise regular homestead came into prominence owing to the American Civil War. It was at this farm, where Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston and Union General William T. Sherman signed the papers pertaining to the surrender of the Confederate troops, thereby ending the fierce Civil War. Now, it is known as the Bennett Place State Historic Site and is open to visitors.

»Burwell School

Burwell School, constructed in 1921 by John Berry, was the home of Reverend Robert Burwell and his family. The Reverend's wife Margaret Anna Burwell used her home to run a girls' school from 1837 to 1857, whence the name Burwell School. Following this the building was used as a home for notable residents of Hillsborough. Burwell School has been working as a historic house museum since 1964. The house, with exhibits and regular events, give visitors a glimpse into the Hillsborough citizens' lives during the Civil War era.

»Morehead Planetarium

This is one of the largest planetariums in the country. The immense domed Star Theater houses a completely automated Zeiss Model VI Star Projector, one of the very few in the world. Shows include "Solar System Adventure," for older students and adults, "Sol & Company" for the youngsters and "Larry, Cat in Space" for the preschool set. Tickets go on sale one half-hour before show time.

Dedicated in 1958 and renovated in the early 1990s, Ackland Art Museum is on the University of North Carolina's campus and features everything from European paintings, contemporary American works,  as well as Asian and African art.  There really is nearly thousands of works on display. Paintings and sculptures by well-known artists Degas and Pisarro are part of the museum's permanent collection.
