Based on the novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux, Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera is a musical theater production that has delighted audiences ever since it opened in 1986 in London's West End. Set in 19th-century Paris, the show follows the story of chorus girl Christine Daaé and the mysterious phantom, a disfigured musical genius living in the bowels of the Paris Opera House. While tutoring her on her vocals, the Phantom becomes dangerously obsessed with Christine, and as he begins to make his presence known, the growing tension within the opera house culminates in the Phantom and Christine meeting face to face. The recipient of both the Tony Award and Olivier Award for Best Musical, the show is Broadway's longest-running musical.

    Mannheim Steamroller
Civic Center of Greater Des MoinesSeptember 20, 2014 2:00 PM
    221 Walnut Street
    Des Moines, Iowa 50309
In an effort to breathe life into a style of music that is typically associated with days of yore and times when aristocrats ruled the majority of Europe, the American neo-classical group Mannheim Steamroller was formed in 1974 and has since helped introduce a new generation of fans to the wonders of symphonic music. Though the majority of the songs the group plays typically fall into the new age music category, the tracks are assembled in a way one would expect from a classical symphony. By incorporating elements of modern flair, like synthesizers and electronic drum kits, Mannheim Steamroller has pushed the boundaries of what people would typically perceive as compositionally sound music. While the outfit has always experienced marginal success since its inception, Mannheim Steamroller found its greatest critical and commercial success in 1984 when it released an album of Christmas instrumental covers.

Will Hoge is an alternative country singer/songwriter and musician from Nashville, Tennessee, who uses elements of Americana and rock n' roll to create a Southern rock sound. After dropping his debut solo album Carousel, in 2001, he released a series of studio and live records before he suffered a nearly fatal scooter accident in 2008 during the recording process of his fifth studio LP. Already renowned for his powerful, narrative songwriting style, he channeled his energy during his months of recovery into one cathartic, life affirming effort titled The Wreckage. Released in 2009, the record was critically acclaimed for its moody sentiments and honest delivery, distinguishing Hoge from the hoards of other country music artists based in Nashville.
