After being driven away from Bayonne by Richard the Lionheart (king of England) in the 12th century, the Viscount of Labourd settled on the hillock overlooking the river Nive (now the town hall). His castle became a centre of justice (finances), courts and assemblies. The Nive retains happy memories of days of a little port buzzing with activity. At the crossroads of road and waterway, gabares
(barges) were overflowing with goods coming from or going to Spain. Later, sadder times saw the massive exodus of Basque people to the Americas. After having made their fortune, the Americans
came back and had large houses built. All these properties -old, imposing, American inspired, etc- tell the story of Ustaritz.
