The city of Gainsville present in the U.S. State of Florida is enriched by a monumental district in the form of the Pleasant Street Historical District. The historically significant district constitutes a massive 770 acres (3.1 square kilometers) of land area. The site is officially designated as a U.S. National Historic District in 1989 and it also stands listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district is inclusive of as many as 259 historical buildings.
Located in Gainesville, the Library East is also known as the Smathers Library. Exquisitely-designed by architect William A. Edwards, the library stands as a striking structure. It was opened in October 1926, and post World War II, a major input was added by Guy Fulton, the Florida Board of Control architect. The library is home to a large number of humanities and social sciences collections. Via mobile shelving, books and reference journals are kept from the first floor to the third. With great architectural features and an array of library resources, the Library East has gained a historically-significant position.
