He began playing the piano at the age of six, and has continued to develop his vocal and instrumental talents ever since, creating a characteristically baroque-pop style, dubbed "popera" (pop opera). Wainwright has collaborated with such artists as David Byrne and Elton John, who has affectionately proclaimed Wainwright as "the greatest songwriter on the planet."
