    »Suzanne Vega

    September 18, 2014 8:00 PM

Suzanne Vega is an American folk singer and songwriter who grew up in New York City via Santa Monica, CA. As she studied modern dance and English literature at the prestigious High School of Performing Arts, she honed her poetry and songwriting skills enough so that by the time she reached university, she was performing at clubs around Manhattan. Vega released her eponymous first album in 1985 to critical acclaim in the US for her fast brand of fol music. She crossed over in a European audience with her follow-up record Solitude Standing, in 1987, with the hit songs "Luka" and "Tom's Diner," and went on to release five more albums in the next two decades, including her most renowned effort, 1990's Days of Open Hand.

    »Steven Wright

    September 18, 2014 8:00 PM

Steven Wright is an American actor, writer and stand-up comedian known for his dry, monotone voice. As a comedian, Wright has developed a devoted following thanks to his unique brand of observational humor that is heavy on comic absurdity and deadpan one-liners. The Massachusetts native released his first comedy album entitled I Have a Pony in 1985, and has since rounded out his resume with a number of headlining specials, tours and bit acting roles. Though the slow, deliberate style that Wright employs might not be up everyone's alley, stand-up fans who appreciate the subtle art of deadpan comedy likely won't be able to find anyone better.

Terrapin is an Algonquian word for a turtle that lives in fresh orbrackishwaters. Because of the University of Maryland's close proximity to lands that have historically belonged to the Algonquain peoples, the school decided it'd be fitting to call the various sports teams thatcompetefor it the Terrapins. The name was coined in 1932 by Dr. Harry "Curley" Byrd, then the university's football coach and eventually its president. Prior to the Terrapins, the Maryland teams were called the Old Liners, areferenceto the state's moniker, "The Old Line State."
