»Georgia International Horse Park (The)

The Georgia International Horse Park is an iconic venue that was first opened in September of 1995. Having hosted the the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, the venue has also hosted the first mountain bike competition. The park hosts two annual events; the Conyers Cherry Blossom Festival and the Big Haynes Creek Wildlife festival. Catering to other gatherings, the park also holds a stadium, a few arenas and pavilions and other event venues. The park also has a number of hiking and biking trails. »Davidson-Arabia Nature Preserve

Davidson-Arabia Nature Preserve encompasses 2550 acres (1031.94 hectares) of pristine forest, and features many dramatic rock outcroppings amid the rolling hills. The park's mountaintop terrain bears a fragile ecosystem, including several protected species of flora. Brochures are available to help visitors identify these rare, endangered plants. Charted hikes include treks past the park's lakes, through the forests, and to the top of the mountain. Take Interstate 20 east to Evans Mill Road (exit 38) and turn right. Turn right again at Klondike Road and drive two miles to the park.

»Panola Mountain Conservation Park

Just 17 miles (27 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta, this 617-acre (250-hectare) park offers a variety of outdoor activities. Explore the natural splendor on any of the park's trails, or stop by on the weekend for a guided hike to the top of the Panola Mountain. Hikers will enjoy the many species of flora and fauna that abound here, as well as the rock formations along the face of the 940-foot (286-meter) mountain itself. Located just outside of old Decatur, Little Mountain offers an affordable round of golf on a challenging course. The course is well-maintained for a public facility, and also features a driving range, practice green and a well-stocked pro-shop. There is also a snack bar at the turn to fuel your swing for the back nine. Green fees for the par-72, 5759-yard (5266-meter) course include cart.

»Stone Mountain Golf Course

Atlanta's natural pride and joy is the sprawling beauty of Stone Mountain Park, where all are welcome to partake of a round at its beautiful 36-hole course. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, much of the course hugs the shores of the park's lake. There's a pro shop on the premises, with lessons and rental clubs available. The course also features practice areas, a driving range and two putting greens. Weekend and holiday rounds require about a week's advance reservation.

»Stone Mountain Park

Just east of Atlanta, this 3200-acre (1300-hectare) park centers on the world's largest exposed granite mountain. Sky lift gondolas whisk visitors 825 feet (251 meters) to the top, where commanding views of the Georgia countryside await them. The north face's 90x100-foot (27x30-meter) bas-relief memorial to Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson is the world's largest. An antebellum plantation, an antique auto museum and a petting zoo are all located within the park, as are camping, dining and lodging accommodations. During the summer, there are evening laser light shows on the mountain.

This urban recreation center brings outdoor fun to the southeast side neighborhood of Little Five Points. In addition to a swimming pool (open during summer months only), the park features tennis courts, basketball courts, softball and soccer fields, a children's playground and a large picnic pavilion. The 48-acre (20-hectare) expanse has extensive paved pathways for biking and in-line skating, plus public restrooms and a specially designated pet area. Take the Flat Shoals Road exit off Interstate 20 and head north. Turn right on 2nd Avenue, then right again on Tilson Road to reach here.
