»The Soft White Sixties W/ Basic Cable Preachers

April 18, 2015 7:00 PM

Based out of San Francisco, Soft White Sixties is a five-piece with a penchant for the musical styles of the 1960s, as the band's name suggests. Melding elements of old Motown, rock and roll and psych, the group manages to be a flashback while maintaining a modern edge. After gaining popularity in its hometown, winning spots on Bay Area radio stations and in festival lineups, the group began to gain more widespread attention, playing SXSW and touring extensively, and seems to be on the brink of fame.

»Earth Day With Friends Of Goodale Park

April 18, 2015 9:00 AM

More than a dozen volunteer-maintained garden beds, 6 tennis courts, over 750 trees, 2 playgrounds, 1 baseball diamond, 1 basketball court and tons of dog spaceall on 33 beautiful acres. Goodale Park is not only Columbus' oldest city park, it's also Columbus' most-used city park. That means LOTS of litter and a great need for volunteers to help with the upkeep. Please join Friends of Goodale Park, Green Columbus, Keep Columbus Beautiful, PRIDE Gives & PRIDE Council, Chase GoodWorks, Columbus Gives Back, and more as we come together for Earth Day 2015. We are in need of volunteers to pull weeds, clear debris, help mulch garden beds and put litter in its place! This year's Earth Day theme is "Right Right Now Now", and what better attitude to bring to volunteering than RIGHT NOW? When: April 18, 2015 9 AM - noon Where: Goodale Park, 120 West Goodale Blvd Columbus, OH 43212 How to find the group:  Volunteers are asked to check in upon arrival. Volunteer check-in will be located at a table (outside) on the west side of the Caretaker's Residence (main shelter house). Wear: Warm, comfortable clothes that you are OK with getting a little bit dirty. Gardening tools will be provided, but you are welcome (and encouraged) to bring any tools that you think might be helpful. Event leader: Alfred at alfred@columbusgivesback.org  What to expect: Our Earth Day cleanup is a lot like our regular work days in the parkjust MUCH bigger, and a LOT more going on. The largest "TO-DO" item on our list is mulch. We get several piles of mulch from Columbus Recreation and Parks, and it's up to us to transport the mulch from piles to our individual garden beds (we have quite a few in the park). We'll have a team assigned to each mulch pile to load up wheelbarrows. Another team will move the wheelbarrows to various garden beds, then additional teams will be stationed at each garden bed to unload and spread the mulch. This all happens AFTER other assigned teams have edged and weeded each garden bed. Whew! Volunteers will be needed to help distribute tools, water/snacks and other supplies to each team. We need assistance with litter pickup and bagging debris from garden beds that have already been weeded and edged, and there will also be a team assigned to the shelter house to organize our supply and tool area. And finally, we ALWAYS need volunteers to help document the work we're doing. We welcome anyone with a camera (any skill level) to take photos during the event, and we would LOVE to have someone come and do interviews for a write-up in our FGP newsletter. PARKING: There is VERY limited parking in Goodale Park.  If driving, volunteers should plan to arrive extra early to secure metered parking along Park Street or Goodale Street. There are also several parking garages located throughout the Short North, within just a few blocks of the park. Please note that many streets in the Short North are now "Permit Parking Only", so don't get towed! We recommend going GREEN! COTA's High Street and Neil Ave lines are just a couple of blocks away. We also have lots of bike parking in Goodale Park as well.   WEATHER We will work in light rain, but never in dangerous weather. A weather update will be posted on the Friends' Facebook page (Friends of Goodale Park) and on Twitter (@GoodaleParkFrnd) at 8am the morning of the event, so please advise volunteers to check our status before heading to the park.
