An Evening With Matt & Kim - Night II
ArtsRiotMarch 13, 2015 8:30 PM
400 Pine Street
Burlington, VT 05401
Matt & Kim is a electronic-influenced indie rock duo from Brooklyn, NY that's composed of Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino. With cheeky vocals and a DIY approach to its music, the band released its self-titled debut album in 2006, and subsequently collected a widespread fan base and critical acclaim for its buoyant rock sound. Filling short two-to-three minute bursts with raucous and extremely catchy pop nuggets, Matt & Kim manages to be playful without being overtly cutesy or sweet. The formula of tough but lighthearted attitudes and sounds has continued to work with each of the duo's passing record, including 2009's Grand and 2012's Lightning.

The second generation roots reggae artist and poet, Luciano, began recording his spiritual music in 1992. His brand of reggae, culture-centric and reflective of his religious beliefs, kept the "Rasta Renaissance" going in the early 1990s following the death of reggae artist Garnett Silk. His song "Shake It Up Tonight" on his 1993 debut album Moving Up, became the #1 UK reggae hit in the same year, though it was a love song and not his usual Rastafarian-driven lyrics. In 2010, Luciano released United States of Africa, his most political album, which dealt with global events and issues. With 19 studio albums, including his 2011 effort, Rub-A-Dub Market, Luciano is a powerful and widely recognizable figure in reggae music.

South Burlington, Vermont 05403
After graduating from the University of Kansas in 1985, Freedy Johnston fled to New York City with a four-track recording of a demo of his own original songs. He signed to Bar None Records soon after arriving in the Big Apple, and although he's never achieved the commercial success he deserves, he's received some praise from Rolling Stone, Spin and a few other music publications. As it turns out, the film world has been a great outlet for Johnston's music ever since his second record Can You Fly was released in 1992.

Current Swell is a roots rock band from British Columbia that pioneered the new roots music push that came out Canada's west coast in the late 2000s. Gaining recognition as a surf rock band, Current Swell has evolved its sound into a bluesy brand of roots rock since it formed in 2006 as a rock and roll act. The five-sometimes six-piece band's roots music is exemplified on its 2009 album, Protect Your Own.

Beginning her career as a folk musician while still a student at Brown University, Erin McKeown has earned a huge following as a result of her tours in and around New England. Since then, her style has become a bit harder to pinpoint as one can hear elements of pop, rock, electronic, jazz and, of course, folk music in her ever-growing songbook. McKeown has released numerous albums since the beginning of her career and continues to tour successfully with such like-minded artists as the Indigo Girls, Josh Ritter and the Ani DiFranco.
