This odd, yet necessary remnant of Antebellum engineering is located in the Sumter National Forest about an hour west of Greenville. In the late 1850's, the long-mentioned idea to cut the distance between Charleston and the Ohio River Valley came to fruition. It was originally conceived to be one of the longest tunnels to pierce the mighty Blue Ridge Mountains, however due to the subsequent Civil War, the tunnel was never completed. Today, the tunnel is the man-made attraction that draws people in, along with the nearby Isaqueena Falls.
