Experience Florida's forest at this state park just over an hour from Panama City. Located three miles south of Chipley, Falling Waters is home to Falling Waters Sink, the state's highest waterfall. Take the beautiful Sink Hole trail to see water cascade into a stream that plummets 73 feet to the bottom, after which the water's destination remains a mystery. Don't miss the butterfly garden, featuring both indigenous and non-native species. Take a swim in the lake or have a picnic. The park features full-facility campsites as well as pavilions that seat dozens of visitors. Admission fees are $4 per vehicle, $1 for each additional passenger or for pedestrians or cyclists. Check the website for information on reserving a large pavilion space. It is open daily from 8 am onwards.
Just over an hour north of Panama City, this park sets itself apart from the rest. One of the few of Florida's state parks with dry caves, Florida Caverns is the only one to offer tours of its caves. Don't forget your good walking shoes for this “moderately strenuous” 45 minute tour and get up-close-and-personal with some stellar stalactites. In addition, Florida Caverns offers numerous outdoor activities and camping, as well as stables for overnight horse camping, although horses are not available for rent. Stop by the visitor's center for audiovisual tours of anything you may have missed. Please note open flames, including campfires, are prohibited in all Florida State Parks. Daily entrance fees are $4 per vehicle and $1 for additional passengers and pedestrians. Cave tour fees vary by age, and campsites are $17 plus tax. It is open daily from 8 am onwards.
An easy half hour drive from Panama City, the Econfina Creek Canoe Livery offers day and overnight canoe and kayak trips through the Panhandle's majestic Econfina Creek, where limestone banks line clear spring waters. The livery has canoes and kayaks available to rent, plus they will provide any shuttle service you may need. No dogs are allowed on your trip.
