»Kyle Hollingsworth (String Cheese Incident) and Swamp Zen

    September 24, 2014 9:30 PM

Kyle Hollingsworth no doubt has a lofty task as a member of the String Cheese Incident; being in a group known for dynamic jams heavily reliant on tight interplay, Hollingsworth has no doubt had to build some serious chops as a result. Unsurprisingly, then, Hollingsworth has taken his creative energies into other realms, including solo work. Speed of Life, his latest outing, marks his third solo album, and in addition to Hollingsworth youll hear musicians from the String Cheese Incident, Big Gigantic, and the Motet. Hollingsworth tells PopMatters about the album, My new album is a celebration of collaboration. From the many musicians of varied genres, including Big Gigantic, The Motet and Elephant Revival, each track has its own story ine in my speed of life.

    »Social Distortion

    October 01, 2014 8:00 PM

Social Distortion is punk rock band from Southern California that was on the forefront of the hardcore punk explosion of the 1980s. The band recorded its debut album Mommy's Little Monster, and released it in 1983, just before the 1994 premiere of the documentary Another State of Mind, the seminal punk rockumentary that featured the band on its 1982 tour. Both releases thrust the band onto the national punk scene, though front man Mike Ness's drug problems forced Social Distortion to disband in 1985. The breakup was only the first of many times Social Distortion would dissolve, though the band has always reformed with different lineups and that managed to produce quality music with Ness always at the helm. By contemporary punk standards, the music of Social Distortion might best be described as punk-inspired alternative rock with a little old fashioned rock'n'roll tossed in the mix, but the band will always be remembered as a pioneer of the Los Angeles hardcore punk scene.

    »Brett Dennen

    October 06, 2014 7:30 PM

The slightly awkward, red haired and freckled singer/songwriter Brett Dennen often surprises audiences with his warm, folk-inflected voice and catchy guitar picking. Dennen began writing songs in 2004 as a camp counselor for kids, but soon realized that music was a career he wanted to pursue. Eventually his soft-rock ballads caught the attention of his contemporaries and Dennen was invited to open for the likes of John Mayer and Jason Mraz. After he secured multiple songs on popular television shows, Dennen had established enough of a reputation to headline prominent venues around the country.

Georgia-based reggae fusion band Passafire was formed in 2003 while its members were still students at Savannah College of Art and Design. Since the 2006 release of its self-titled debut album, Passafire has offered a reggae-rock sound with understated elements of jazz, dub, ska and hard rock. For its fourth studio album Start From Scratch, released in 2011, the band makes use of synthesizers as well as banjo and harmonica tones for a half synthetic and half organic sound.

»Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour ~ Red Bluff, California

    November 01, 2014 6:00 PM

The Wild is an indie folk act from Atlanta, Georgia that applies a hard-lined punk ethos to its music, which provides its songs with an unpredictable and somewhat erratic quality. Founded in 2008, the band's strong DIY approach has infiltrated nearly every facet of its being--from recording, to touring, to releasing its music. Though the group's staunch, anti-corporate sound and sociological beliefs haven't resounded well with some listeners, The Wild's unique sonic aesthetic and philosophical outlook have also attracted a fan base that craves the group's politically-charged, punk-influenced, folk rock.
