Off Wallajah High Road
Erected as early as 1795, the predominantly grey Big Mosque
was carved from granite and constructed by Nawab Wallajah's family. This South Indian pilgrimage stop was built without the use of iron, wood or other materials, which is quite astonishing. The exquisitely unusual architectural style of this 2 minaret mosque reflects a combined touch of Islamic and Iranian architecture. Being one of the oldest mosques in all of India, this holy place deservedly becomes a much photographed and visited tourist attraction in Chennai.
