    »The Voice

    July 26, 2014 7:30 PM

Growing up in a musical family, Dia Frampton's father was a DJ in South Korea before he moved to the US. Fittingly, two of his daughters took up music themselves, with Dia on vocals and her sister Meg on the guitar. Soon the two girls formed a pop-punk band, appropriately titled Meg & Dia, which garnered enough attention on MySpace to win it the "Best MySpace Band" slot on Warped Tour in 2006. Though the duo found a good deal of success, Meg & Dia struggled with record labels, finally resulting in the band being dropped from Warner Brothers. Since then Dia Frampton branched off on her own and performs more folk-pop work. Her live shows generally include a heaping helping of cover songs, from the likes of Adele to Taylor Swift to Mumford and Sons.

    »The Music Man

    July 26, 2014 2:00 PM

The talented youth performers of Young Actors' Theatre present the heartwarming family favorite "The Music Man". Lovable swindler "Professor" Harold Hill is trying to pull a con on the citizens of River City, Iowa. He claims he'll save the town's youth from sin and corruption by selling them instruments and helping to organize a boys' band -- despite the fact that he actually knows nothing about music. Soon, the irresistible "Music Man" manages to turn the bickering school board into a barbershop quartet, win the heart of Marian the librarian, and somehow transform into an honest man in the process. The delightful story is set to a parade of classic Broadway tunes, including "Seventy-Six Trombones," "Ya Got Trouble," "Till There Was You" and "Goodnight, My Someone."

    »Slightly Stoopid's Summer Sessions 2014

    July 26, 2014 5:30 PM

Riding the coattails of the mid-1990s trend of combining reggae and alternative rock, Slightly Stoopid is s six-piece band from San Diego that has enjoyed a period of long-lasting success due in large part to its disinterest in straying from its characteristic sound. The band's ska-tinged reggae/rock sound, a style spearheaded by the likes of Sublime and 311, captured widespread attention first in San Diego and then across the country with its sun-soaked acoustic guitar riffs and laid-back vibe. Slightly Stoopid released its eponymous debut album, stylized as Slightly $toopid, in 1996 when it was still a duo, though the band slowly grew into into an eight-piece collective with each passing album. By the mid 2000s, the band had adopted a slew of musicians including a conga player, harpist, trumpeter and saxophinist, resulting in its multi-genre 2005 album, Closer to the Sun. Slightly Stoopid now operates its own label, the aptly-titled Stoopid Records, which it uses to release its albums as well as those of like-minded up-and-coming bands.

Abandoned at birth by her Chinese family, Jade McCullough was raised in America, always feeling like an outsider, never knowing whom her biological family was. Her only clue as to her past is half a jade heart that was found as an infant in her swaddling clothes. Shifting between reality and fantasy, Jade struggles to find herself and define her future with the woman she loves most, her single mother, and the mental image of the biological mother who deserted her. The "Chicago Sun-Times" called "Jade Heart" "rich in pathos and wit."

    »Donavon Frankenreiter

    July 26, 2014 8:00 PM

Best friends with Jack Johnson, Donavan Frankenreiter has an almost identical biography compared to his surfing, acoustic soft-rock producing peer. Born and raised in San Clemente, California Frankenreiter received a sponsorship from Billabong as a teenager and subsequently traveled the world as a part of the company's surf team. While staying in Hawaii, the young surfer rented a house from Jack Johnson's parents and the two surfer musicians became fast friends. After releasing a handful of albums with the band Sunchild, he pursued a solo career in the early 2000s and released his eponymous debut effort in 2004. Frankenreiter has since collected a passionate following in Australia with releases including 2010's Revisited and 2012's Start Livin'.
