Live oak timbers milled here in 1794 were used in building "Old Ironsides," the USS Constitution, in 1874, and timbers were also cut here for the Brooklyn Bridge.
The Fort King George is one of the oldest British forts in the state of Georgia. Built in 1721 under the supervision of Colonel John “Tuscarora Jack” Barnwell, the troops stationed here suffered from malaria owing to poor hygiene. Flooding of river, constant threat of invasion, lack of sufficient food supply further added to their woes. Eventually, the fort was abandoned and later a replica of the fort was erected for public viewing.

Its placement along the mouth of the Altamaha River made it susceptible to capture and conquest, and the first to do so were the Scottish Highlanders who arrived in 1736 and built this settlement named Darien. The city’s idyllic location and its rich history make it an ideal spot for curious visitors. See the website for more information.
