The Arc Of Illinois 65th Annual Convention
Hilton Lisle / NapervilleApril 22, 2015 8:30 AM
3003 Corporate West Drive
Lisle, IL 60532-3603
This two-day convention will provide attendees with the latest information on many issues from birth and early intervention to transition from high school, employment and improving the quality of life in the community. We will focus on the progress we have made in 65 years, the changes we face today and empowering individuals to have a Bright Future. There are twenty-four breakout sessions. There are three keynote speakers, two luncheon presentations, over thirty presenters and a Wednesday Evening Reception Presentation.   The following are the keynote presenters:   Wednesday, April 22, 2015 10:45 a.m.  -  12:00 p.m. Making a Difference in a Changing World: Invent the Future! Derrick DuFresne Almost every prediction regarding the limitations of people with disabilities for the last 100 years has been proven dead wrong. First the experts said people with disabilties wouldn't live very long. Then they couldn't  learn or recover, and then they couldn't work. And on and on it has gone. People with disabilties don't want us to be pilots but rather navigators that assist in helping them to get a life - not a program. The problem is that many professionals see the world through the prism of what has been not what could be. This limits options, possibilities, and potential. This presentation will challenge participants to create "dosearch" to create the research and the data that can guide services and supports - Practice Based Evidence. The role of staff in this important transformation is critical. We need to be inventing, not preventing, desirable futures for people with disabilities.      Wednesday, April 22, 2015   2:00  -  3:30 p.m.   The Promise and Possibility of Employment First and Employment for All"   Mike Callahan    This presentation will feature the critical role of Customized Employment, Discovery and paid internships as critical ingredients of success in implementing Employment First initiatives and in assuring employment is extended to all individuals with disabilties. Particular attention will be paid to a national demonstration that is successfully using paid internships as a form of Expanded Discovery. This demonstration is examing a collection of strategies that are promising practices in creating a bridge to employment from workshops, schools and home.   Thursday, April 23, 2015    11:00 a.m.  -  12:15 p.m.   The Ligas Decree After Four Years: Is the Honeymood Over?" Tony Records    Four years of implementaion of the Ligas Decree has resulted in over 4,000 class members now receiving community-based services. In the aftermath of this success, budget shortfalls now thhreaten the continuing need for ecpansion of the Illinois community sypports system. Rates for community services remain among the lowest in the country. Many families and class members are still waiting for what they need and want. Federal rules now include increased scrutiny to ensure that services are provided in the most integrated setting. Demand for crisis services is still high. The Ligas Monitor will explain these challenges and what The Arc of Illinois members can do toward addressing them.  Click here for a full brochure.
