Bars & Cafes
Cafe Bravo is a family operated cafe that features a range of coffee blends and Asian peral teas. Complement your coffee or tea with a fresh sandwich, salad, or pastry. While the java joint is rather obscure, part of a small strip mall, its inside boasts colorful décor. Photographs and paintings by local artists hang from the walls, creating an inviting spot to lounge.
When you walk into this coffeehouse, don't let the somber book shelf decor, the laptop-fixated crowd, and uptight baristas frighten you away. With a great selection of coffee and beers, it won't be long before you understand what makes people who visit The Laughing Goat return again. For entertainment, the Goat hosts poetry readings, art shows and band performances throughout the week. Check website for details.
This adorable café, bedecked in a menagerie of colors, sits one block east of the Pearl Street Mall. Its lively atmosphere and cluttered tables promote conversation. Most of the menu items come with creative names, such as the Altitude Adjustment crepe and the It was Sam Andreas Fault omelet. Vegetarian dishes are plentiful. A full espresso bar offers a multitude of caffeine fixations, and a range of beers and wines. Live music plays Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.
This carefree place has a penchant for all things out of a bygone-hippie era which may seem a bit anachronistic, however the recognizable psychedelia and music make it comfortable. Even if you are not into that music or style, the menu is still worth checking out. Here the kitchen features healthy salads, sandwiches and a huge selection of burger options like the 'Black and Blue Burger', which is a pepper crusted blue cheese monster. On tap, visitors will find Mountain Sun's very own beers, don't forget to check out the 'Dark Side of the Sun' list which features tons and tons porter and stout.
The Cup is a locally run coffeehouse that is the one of the most popular student cafes on the Pearl Street Mall. The most common complaint about the cafe is, in fact, that is often too crowded to sit down for a hot drink and snacks with friends, even during off-peak hours. Still, if you are lucky enough to get in, it's easy to understand the Cup's popularity. The atmosphere is bohemian and chic, there are very few aluminum tables and chairs, but many couches and corner booths. The prices are lower than any other cafe on Pearl Street, and the espresso-based drinks are addictive. The Cup is family-owned and the staff always friendly to both regulars and newcomers alike. - Sabrina Zirakzadeh
This is the spot for CU undergrads to drink and be merry, mostly because the drinks fit their budget and conviviality is the name of the game. The bar owners are proud to say that it has the closest patio to Folsom Field where the Buffaloes play. The crowd is mostly students and the beers are almost always of the craft variety. Drinks specials and theme nights run throughout the week and another super attribute is that they serve Fatty J's Pizza from right next door.
No Name Bar is a hip bar/concert venue that features live music and theme nights throughout the week. On Mondays the entertainment is Bluegrass, on Tuesdays its almost always 'Swing Night' and the rest of the week guests will find a eclectic slew of young, local, up-and-coming artists plying their sound. Behind the bar, there is nary a trace of domestic beer, in lieu, guests have their choice of some of the best craft beers in Colorado. The bar is located off Broadway in a strip-mall, and despite the tacky architecture outside, it belies the great beer and varied music inside.
If you are a fan of Irish beers, then Conor O'Neill's is the ideal watering hole where to quench your thirst. Conor's is just like many pubs on the Emerald Isle, where it serves not only as a place to drink, but as a place to just socialize. On tap, you'll find the usual beers like Guinness and Smithwick's alongside a couple of wildcards as well. Inside, the simple decor, ambiance, food and music keep people coming back.
Sometimes establishments that bill themselves as sports bars are nothing more than glorified locker rooms for the local softball teams. The Lazy Dog, however, does not fall into this category. Jerseys and sports memorabilia are judicially placed so that they do not border on overkill. Televisions are prominent, but not to the point of being distracting to those who only want to dine. The dinner and lunch menu are the same and feature a host of Salads, Pizza, Pasta dishes, and Sandwiches. See their website for further information.
This funky pizza joint on University Hill is one of the best student budget spots in town. The fact that Robert Redford once worked as a janitor here during his short stint at CU is their claim to fame, yet celebrities and dignitaries continue to visit for the burgers, even President Obama once visited. The pizzeria stays open late, making it popular with the college crowd and it comes in three crust choices based on density. Saving the crust and then dipping it in honey at the end of the meal is also a tradition here.
Harpo's Sports Grill has 30 Television Sets with the state of the art satellite system so that you can watch your favorite game while you eat. The satellite system features all major sports packages. The building is steeped in Boulder's history. The rooftop dining has a wonderful view. Each night is dedicated to a different drink special. For entertainment, you can take part in trivia quiz held every night, or play the game room, where you can choose from cards or arcade games.
Savor specialty low country cuisine at the Shug's that is located in downtown area of the Boulder city. Owned and managed by Chef Sean Shelby, it provides for Southern delights.
