»Rue Sainte-Catherine

Entirely pedestrianized and over a kilometer long, this is the busiest shopping street in Bordeaux; it is also one of the town's oldest thoroughfares. In Roman times, it was a major north-south road. Today, it is still important, since it links the Grand Théâtre to the Place de la Victoire. The street has borne the same name since the 18th Century, in honor of the martyr saint whose chapel is located nearby.

»St-Pierre Quarter

In 1832, beneath Place St. Pierre, a magnificent Hellenistic statue of Hercules was found which was used for decoration at the entrance to the port. In the 12th century, the ancient port was filled in and the quarter was built. At this point the banks were diverted towards the south. In the 18th century, the intendants Boucher and Tourny opened up the quarter by destroying the medieval walls and laid out the place de la Bourse while opening up the place du Parlement. This quarter features many houses in the style of Louis XV, which are decorated with mascarons, statues, and balconies of stone and the streets are filled with some of the best restaurants in the city.

Although a large portion of this church was renovated during the 19th Century, its Gothic facade and its beautiful entryway, done in the flamboyant style of the 14th and 15th Centuries, were kept intact. Within the church, the most interesting features are a Pieta dating from the 17th Century which illuminates the interior with its striking whiteness, as well as a statue of St-Pierre and St-Paul. »Notre Dame Church (St. Dominic)

The design of the Eglise Notre Dame was the work of Pierre Duplessy, who was the king's architect as well as Bordeaux's great urbanist. Because of the proximity of another convent, the Dominicans (in the early days of the religious establishment) began to open the edifice to the east, in the opposite direction of the usual orientation of churches. In 1700, the king authorized the construction of the vaulting, limiting the thickness to 16 centimeter (six inches) in order to ensure the canons could not be mounted and threaten the Château Trompette. The organ, added in 1785, is the church's crown jewel.
