»An Evening With Texas

April 27, 2015

Texas is an alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland that's known for successfully fusing a defined radio-friendly pop sound with a more hard lined rock style to create a cohesive and listenable whole.Formed in 1986 by lead singer/songwriter Sharleen Spiteri, the group released its debut single "I Don't Want a Lover" in 1989 and the song went on to perform extremely well on song charts in various countries around the world. Though the group's popularity has since ebbed substantially since its heyday in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Texas has nevertheless carried on and continues to maintain a fairly busy recording and touring schedule.

»Sharon Van Etten

April 27, 2015 8:00 PM

New York-based singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten is a musician who's unafraid of creating music that some people might perceive as being overtly personal. Her mellow folk and soft rock songs are comprised of slightly listless instrumentation, but her pensive lyrics are extremely astute and worth paying attention to. Van Etten released her debut LP, Because I Was In Love, in 2009, and in the short time since its release, she's received a significant amount of praise both from critics and the general listening public for her doleful yet extremely contemplative tunes.

ROSIE UPTON Rosie Upton was born in Chesterfield and brought up in Matlock, Derbyshire. Began singing in folk clubs in the Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby area as a teenager but left home for university in Bristol and am now based in the West Country. In the 1970s and 80s performed at clubs, concerts and festivals around the country, as well as on the radio and TV as a duo with my husband Pete MacGregor. Together we ran Bath's Hat and Feather Folk Club and Bradford on Avon's Riverside Folk Club in the 1970s and 80s and are currently part of a team who run the Trowbridge based Village Pump.My weekly Folk, Roots and World Music articles were featured in The Bath Chronicle for 25 years. I intended to record an album back in the early 1980s but family, career and trade union activities intervened. I have recently retired though I continue to run regular song and voice workshops with a repertoire of songs of social and political comment within the trade union movement using my married name Rosie MacGregor. I'm hoping to rebuild my early career and now have more time to dedicate to my love of folk music.SUPPORT TBCTickets: £5 + BF inc Pie and Pies or £5otd (Gig Entry ONLY)This gig is part of the Worker's Memorial Day events organised by Hartlepool Trade Union Council everybody welcome.

»Marc Almond

April 28, 2015 7:00 PM

Marc Almond (born Peter Mark Sinclair Almond on July 9th, 1957 in Southport, Lancashire) is a popular English singer, songwriter and recording artist who originally found fame as half of the seminal synthpop and new wave duo, Soft Cell. Almond initially shot to fame with Soft Cell in the 1980s, as the band's combination of drama and peep show sleaze set to an electronic beat gave it hits such as "Tainted Love" and "Bedsitter." Almond’s solo work runs the gamut from electronica and dance music to french chanson, traditional piano ballads and Russian romance songs, as exhibited on his 2003 album, Heart on Snow. Influences include David Bowie, a childhood hero of his, as well as early 1960s Northern Soul and disco. Other major influences have been Scott Walker and Jacques Brel, 12 of whose songs Almond reworked in English for his 1989 album, Jacques. Almond’s own lyrics are a creative expression of what he sees and are not to be confused with his own life. He also operates a record label, Blue Star Music, on which he has released many of his solo and collaborative records in the UK.User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License and may also be available under the GNU FDLDescription from last.fm. »Nick Cave

April 29, 2015 8:00 PM

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is a rock band composed of an assortment of talented international musicians and helmed by the enigmatic and startlingly talented stageman and chief singer/songwriter Nick Cave.Formed in 1984 after Cave's previous band--the Gothic-inspired, post-punk band The Birthday Party--broke up, the Bad Seeds distinguished itself with a theatrically-rich sound that helped set itself apart from the myriad of other contemporary acts out there. Continuing to build positive buzz for itself throughout the mid-to-late 1980s, the band started to breakout in the 1990s, with critically lauded albums like1994's Let Love In and 1996's Murder Ballads. While Cave has managed to branch out into an impressive amount of artistic mediums--including screenwriting, literary fiction writing and film scoring--he has managed to maintained a respectably busy recording and touring schedule with the Bad Seeds. The group's 2013 LP, Push the Sky Away, was met with universal acclaim--helping turn a new generation of music fans on to Cave and Co.'s unique and unforgettable sound.
