»Death Of A Salesman

April 21, 2015 7:15 PM

Death of a Salesman is a play by renowned American playwright Arthur Miller, and is considered to be one of the major milestones of 20th Century Western theater. Prior to Miller's work, much of what was generally considered to be the definition of tragedy in art was derived from Aristotle's Poetics--where a tragedy, as a rule, involved the rise and fall of a hero or great person. Arthur Miller hoped to overturn this notion of tragedy by applying it to a lesser individual, namely, a salesman. The play follows the gradual breakdown of a salesman and father who cannot achieve greatness--a breakdown that is further compounded by his own determination to become a great man despite his advanced age. Miller's play earned numerous awards after its premier in on Broadway 1949, including the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
