When all else in Southside closes for the night, Nana Funks livens things up with eclectic music and an energetic crowd. This bar opens a lot later than other places in the neighborhood and is a big draw among club goers. Shoot some pool at the back or head straight to the dance floor where the DJ spins a mix of R&B, pop, rap and hip-hop hits from the 1970s and onwards. Lively until the wee hours and always buzzing with patrons, a visit here ensures a great nightlife experience in Alabama.

The Nick is not much to look at from the outside; the flat, featureless building covered with handbills almost appears abandoned. But closer inspection reveals that the handbills are all for upcoming gigs scheduled at this 21+ rock nightclub. No food is served, but there is a full bar. The cover charge varies depending on the night's entertainment. The Nick has a private club license so it can remain open past the city's required closing time of 2am. Most nights, The Nick closes “whenever we want,” according to one of the managers. Credit cards are accepted for bar purchases, but not for cover charges.

Gyros and wrap sandwiches at very reasonable prices are the big draw here, although Aladdins' menu is as diverse as they come. Dinner specials include gyros, garden vegetable pitas, fish, falafel and burgers. Hummus, French fries and tabouli salad are among the sides. Beer and wine are available by the bottle, but the iced tea flavored with mint is the drink of choice.
