Sparrenburg is ancient castle believed to have been built in 1256 and served as the city's defensive wall. Built by the counts of Ravensberg, the castle was regularly expanded and changes were made so it could withstand new forms of weaponry. As time went by, the castle ceased to be put to its original use and was used instead as a dungeon before eventually falling to ruins in the 17th-century. The whole castle was later restored to its former glory and is now a major tourist attraction. It is also witness to a host of cultural events in the region. Guided tours of the castle are available. Check the website for more information.
