    Tiradentes Square

    Praça Tiradentes
    Belo Horizonte, 36325-000
    +55 31 3429 0405 (Tourist Information)

Tiradentes was the nickname of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, a dentist turned soldier who ended up as a martyr of the Minas Gerais Conspiracy in the 1700s. The Conspiracy was a movement to establish Minas Gerais as an independent republic separate from Portugal. Tiradentes surrendered to the Portuguese crown in order to protect his colleagues. He was hanged in Rio on April 21, 1792. He is still remembered as a martyr and the day of his death is a national holiday. This square pays homage to the man and his legacy. The bronze statue sculpted by Antonio Van der Weill was erected in 1963 and shows Tiradentes standing with a rope around his neck, moments before meeting his fate.
