Pampulha is a man-made lake that was part of a project commissioned by Mayor Juscelino Kubitscheck in the 1940s. As Belo Horizonte is located far from the coast, the idea was to create a leisure area for locals which would also provide some contact with nature. Famous architect Oscar Niemeyer was responsible for the complex of interestingly-shaped buildings around the lake, where excellent examples of Brazilian modern art can also be found. The area around it developed quite quickly into a lively culture and sports hub, with highlights being the Art Museum and Mineirão Stadium. The lake is a perfect place for walks, cycling, picnics or just relaxing on a sunny day.
