    »The Mighty Orq

    August 23, 2014 6:30 PM

The trio of Texans known as The Mighty Orq combines timeless sounding classic rock, catchy pop melodies, Matt R. Johnson's mashing drum lines and powerhouse guitar riffs. The group's music, led by surprisingly sentimental lyrics by guitarist Mighty Orq and bassist Terry Glen Dry, can be traced back to influences like ZZ Top and Kings X. The band's debut album, Milk Money, released in 2005, found critical acclaim in the United States and abroad in the UK. With the help of celebrated producer Ben Elliot, who has worked with legends Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, The Mighty Orq's sound was noticeably sharper on its 2008 album, To The Bone. After a 2011 release of a live recordings album, The Mighty Orq has continued to gain celebrity status in its hometown of Houston, while also reaching widespread audiences.

With a cast of characters that includes water sprites, beach bums, mermaids and even aquatic gods, the 14 dancers of "Quench" explore some of the many ways in which water impacts our lives -- whether it be a source of life, a playground for pranks or a fountainhead of infinite beauty. Filled with dazzling costumes, live musical accompaniment and a whole lotta water, the many dance numbers in this bright and buoyant show will flip, drip, drop and splash their way across the stage of the Frenetic Theater.

    »Garfunkel and Oates

    August 23, 2014 7:00 PM

Taking their name from the oft-overlooked members of two classic pop duos, Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome formed the comedy folk group Garfunkel & Oates in 2007. Both had backgrounds in the comedy circuit of Southern California and eventually met at the West Coast version of the storied Upright Citizens Brigade. Bonding over their mutual love for both comedy and music, Micucci and Lindhome began creating a humor-centric brand of twee indie folk as Garfunkel & Oates, penning cutesy and clever acoustic guitar and ukulele-driven songs with titles such as "Weed Card," "Pregnant Women Are Smug" and "Go Kart Racing (Accidentally Masturbating)." The duo has fully taken advantage of social media and modern modes of self-promotion, utilizing homemade youtube videos to find a devoted following. In early 2011, Garfunkel & Oates signed a contract with HBO to produce a television version of its act, capitalizing on a format that has found success over recent years with other music/comedy duos such as Tenacious D and Flight of the Conchords.
