»Measure For Measure

February 12, 2015 8:00 PM

Measure for Measure is a play by William Shakespeare that, while generally considered to be one of the playwright's comedies, is categorized by many critics and scholars as one of the Bard's "problem plays"--or a play that cannot be counted as a strict comedy or tragedy due to its dubious mood or outcome. The story follows a young betrothed couple who, due to lack of money, are unable to afford an officially sponsored marriage and are harassed, as a result, by an extremely conservative (and hypocritical) judge who seeks to punish their apparent sexual indiscretions outside of wedlock. The play's ending, though not tragic in the sense of the main characters dying, can be seen as being particularly tragic for the women of the play being forced into marriages that they apparently do not want.

»Kölner Karneval

February 17, 2015

The Carnival period is known by the inhabitants of Cologne as the 'fifth season.' In fact, the entire city goes mad for a number of days. The Carnival actually begins on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at eleven minutes past eleven, and ends on Ash Wednesday. Prunksitzungen, giant ceremonial parties, begin in January/February, and things reach a climax on Rosenmontag (Rose Monday), when a massive parade is held. 40 Carnival societies, some of them over 100 years old and 122 bands march through the streets, throwing sweets and flowers into the crowds. Near the end of January, the gay-oriented festivities, Röschen Sitzung, take place. Please check the festival's website for a complete list of events.
