This 18th Century fort was built during the French and Indian War in 1754. It served as the British colonial outpost on the Kennebec River in today's Augusta, Maine. Never directly attacked, the fort was the starting place for the Benedict Arnold's 1775 expedition into Quebec. The fort now stands as the oldest log fort in the United States and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Today the fort is open to visitors with a store and museum onsite.
