Once you enter Claddagh, you've left New Zealand--from the accents behind the bar to the selection of beers and whiskey's to the traditional Irish fare, you could be in County Cork. Wood paneling is the motif here with dark polished oak providing the backdrop to the bar, the booths and the walls. With low lights and leaded glass, the atmosphere is subdued, but when there is a traditional band, as there is most weekends, Claddagh sparkles. A full selection of Irish and New Zealand beers, Irish whiskey and a wine list is available. Food is hearty and traditional. The bar opens Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m.

El Nino is a stylish bar and restaurant with a Latin American beat. Old farm implements and antique bric-a-brac adorn the walls and the ceilings have high wooden beams. Their specialty is South American cuisine and their fajitas are especially good. The wine and beverage list is extensive - a frozen margarita at the bar makes a good starter or refreshing end to your meal. There is a big screen in the bar area for watching sports and a small walled-off area containing several poker machines. A large, internal, roofed, brick courtyard area is available for private functions.
Tuscany is a well-kept local secret; everything is well prepared and delicious and the menu although simple, is varied. For breakfast try Tuscany pancakes with fresh fruit and bacon, or Scottish kippers on toast. All day brunch is available at weekends. Lunch offers a variety of tasty pies, quiches, frittata, samosas, salads and large filled sandwiches and sweet treats such as lemon slice. The coffee is Illy, with nice frothy cappuccinos, and teas including herbals.
Nickies Thai Restaurant, is a popular Thai food joint at Newmarket in Auckland. A complete Thai experience with 'Thai wall paintings, carvings, a large tank of fish and soft Thai music playing in the background with authentic food to please your tastebuds. Staff is efficient and the service is speedy. The menu is vast with a complete list of vegetarian dishes too. Try the "Kao Pad Kra Praw Gai", "Satay Gai Bon Kao", " Nuan Chuan Chim", "Goong Med", "Pla Lerd Ros" and the ultra spicy "Tom Yum Goong soup". Beer, wines are also served for those looking for cool accompaniments with the spicy food. One can also opt for something sweet with Black lava or Kahlua cheesecake for dessert. The restaurant closes in the afternoon and opens in the evening again at 5 p.m.
TriBeCa Restaurant and Bar is situated in the landmark, red brick building which formerly housed the Institute for the Blind. Light and airy, and set back from the hustle and bustle, TriBeCa offers relaxed dining both indoors and in the brick courtyard. The menu is a tantalizing selection of international cuisine--Moroccan seared tuna; a confit of wood-smoked quail; or green peppercorn rubbed venison for example. The beverage list is extensive, from juices, shakes and coffee through to beer and a good selection of wine.
Located in an impressive turn-of-the-century brick building, the Horse and Trap is an Auckland institution. With three levels of bars and restaurants, the wood/brick interior is exquisite--the wooden bar is especially ornate. There is a fireplace for chilly evenings and a garden patio for warm afternoons. Chocolate Parisienne Cake serving six to eight, Gin and Lemon Cake serving six to eight, Dacquoise, the "towering dessert", serving 12-15, Orange and Cardamom Tart serving 12-15 are just some of the offerings. Choose a slice to "eat in", accompanied by coffee, tea, sandwiches and rolls. High tea includes two club sandwiches, a slice of cake and tea or espresso.
The atmosphere is pleasantly relaxed and friendly, and the service is good. You can sit inside, or street side, to watch the local action--if you can find a spare seat. Sierra serves wonderful cooked breakfasts, and well-presented counter food, along with excellent coffee. Once the Mt Eden Post Office, this rustic spot just outside of Auckland has taken on new life as a Belgian Beer Cafe. The De Post offers a wide list of Belgian beers with traditional cuisine including their beloved steaming pot of mussels. Stella, Bellevue, Leffe and Hoegaarden are always on tap here which adds a perfect touch to the pleasant atmosphere.
A classic wine bar located behind a 100-year old shopfront, the Corner Store Wine Bar is small but popular. With a good wine list and striking décor, the Corner Store is open until late, providing the complete experience. Style is the key word here--from the black and white tiled floor to the chrome bar stools to the beveled oval mirrors. Wine is available by the glass or bottle, and the selection is excellent. There is also an espresso machine on call.
