»Les Misérables

April 18, 2015 8:00 PM

Grand and uplifting, "Les Misérables" is one of the most popular musicals of all time. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, "Les Mis" won eight Tony Awards on Broadway and was adapted into an Oscar-winning film. Now Fullerton's Maverick Theater presents this sweeping tale of heartbreak, passion and the resilience of the human spirit in an intimate new production. You'll be immersed in the tale of ex-convict Jean Valjean's struggle for redemption while trying to outrun the determined police inspector Javert, and moved by the innocent love of his adopted daughter Cosette for the revolutionary Marius. This modern classic is brought to life with a gorgeous score, including the beloved songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and more.

»The Book Of Liz

April 18, 2015 5:00 PM

David and Amy Sedaris just might be the funniest famous siblings since the Marx Brothers. "The Book of Liz", one of their collaborations, is a zany stage play about discovering your own self-worth. David first achieved fame after his "Santaland Diaries" aired on NPR. He's since written a series of best-sellers, including "Me Talk Pretty One Day", "Dress Your Family in Cordoroy and Denim" and "When You Are Engulfed in Flames". Amy starred on Comedy Central's "Strangers with Candy" and continues to be an ubiquitous (and hilarious) presence on film and TV. Coming to STAGEStheatre in Fullerton, "The Book of Liz" focuses on the outrageous adventures of Sister Elizabeth Donderstock. A devoted maker of cheeseballs, Donderstock ventures from her tiny religious community to encounter a host of colorful characters, among them Ukrainians with Cockney accents, restaurants run by recovering alcoholics and a certain talking peanut.

»Dead Man's Cell Phone

April 18, 2015 8:00 PM

The phrase "dead ringer" takes on unexpected new meanings in "Dead Man's Cell Phone", the imaginative romantic comedy from MacArthur "Genius" and Pulitzer finalist Sarah Ruhl. An incessantly ringing phone chips away at the peaceful ambiance in an otherwise quiet café until Jean, a woman sitting at the next table, has had enough. Discovering the phone's owner is dead, she answers the call anyway -- and soon finds herself dating the dead man's brother, sharing cosmopolitans with his widow and meeting his mistress for a mysterious rendezvous. Jean's odd odyssey leads her to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption and the need to connect in a world obsessed with technology. Brian Johnson makes his STAGEStheatre's directorial debut, helming this insightful work about how society memorializes the dead and how that process changes the living forever.
