Iowa State Fairgrounds was originally the Charles Thornton Farmstead and has been the home of the Iowa State Fair since 1886. Spread across 435 acres (176.03 hectares), these sprawling grounds also have historic buildings and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. These include structures like the primary house and barn, the 1902 Livestock Pavilion and the 1904 Agriculture Building. Nearly more than half of the open space is used for the annual fair and the remaining is a campground. The entire area is divided into departments. It also hosts concerts, flea markets, livestock exhibitions, antiques and, auto and trade shows.
Sleepy Hollow Sports Park is a 60-acre sports and family recreation complex. Some of the many activities offered at the park include bumper boats, go-karts, mini-golf, climbing wall, batting cages, and sand volleyball. In the winter they also have skiing, snow tubing, and snowboarding. The complex is also available for group events such as birthday parties, corporate picnics, school field trips, and many others. Built in 1930, it is now called The Kirkwood and is a luxury condo. Though there are spaces available for cultural events as well. It has also hosted the prestigious Backstage Ball which is held annually to honor local musicians.
Named after the former inmates of its building (a Woolworth Store), Wooly's is a newly established music venue. Though the owners have developed a modern space, they have retained some parts of the old structure. It is a spacious concert venue and can accommodate almost 700 to 800 guests. Different genres of music are played here, however the focus is on indie rock; local and nationally recognized singers and songwriters entertain audiences with their enthralling performances. Hoyt Sherman Place is a multipurpose venue that dates back to the late 19th Century. The lavish building retains its original parquet floors and marble fireplaces, which makes it a popular venue for corporate events and private parties.
