Chicago is well known as home to many blues greats, and, as a result, plenty of decent blues bars feature respectable music and good bands catering to tourists. But musicians who play at these tourist clubs, they go to Rosa's when they really want to hear the good stuff. A nondescript tavern room located four-five miles from Old Town and Lincoln Park, Rosa's offers the unbeatable combination of great music and cheap drinks. Although the crowd here is friendly, any musician who gets up to play at Rosa's knows that he or she better bring some serious chops to the table, because bad music simply isn't tolerated here. Coming to Rosa's is sure to soothe your soul.
Just west of Chicago, Engergy is unique in that it is only open on Thursday nights with the exception of special events. The club has a zero tolerance policy, freely inspecting anyone upon entry.

The Orbit Room is a bar located in the northern section of Chicago. If you're looking to meet someone, take it from the husband-and-wife owners who met in a bar when they say that it's possible. Get dressed, bring some disposable cash, and look for your soul mate or just have fun in this new funky and relaxed Logan Square hangout.
Double Vision is a cool bar that welcomes one and all. The causal and friendly ambiance puts you to ease in an instant. This simple bar is frequented by patrons for its fun atmosphere and great music. Occasionally, it also features DJ Nights that include latest chartbusters and funky tunes. This posh lounge is a great place for those who actually like to hear themselves talk while enjoying their favorite drink. The setting is intimate with low lighting and dark decor. With about 50 seats throughout the place there is a fair amount of seating, but it can get busy when the late-night crowd rolls in around 2:00. Bartenders are friendly and approachable and service is pretty quick if the time is right.
A recent New York Times article that discussed Chicago theater companies rightly highlighted this growing off-Loop (the Chicago equivalent of off-Broadway) company. Now finishing its fourth season, The House Theatre of Chicago has built a citywide reputation as a fearless fringe company with a self-aware style yet readily accessible. Much of the House Theatre mission is to involve the collaboration of the artistic process. As such House shows include singing, elaborate (yet tasteful) special effects, and many other elements that play to the best parts of the spectacle of theatre. If you plan on checking out something outside the world famous theatres (i.e. Steppenwolf and Goodman), the House Theatre is rapidly becoming a staple of the brilliant Chicago theatre scene. The theater opens at 8pm from Thursday to Saturday and at 7pm on Sundays.
Gallery Cabaret is a cushy, though somewhat narrow, Bucktown neighborhood bar and art gallery. Bands perform here several nights a week. Local celebrity blues acts and lounge pianists Ben & Pepper regularly make appearances, and Pepper's art also frequently adorns the walls. Gallery Cabaret has a good selection of beer, though be forewarned—prices are more expensive on weekends. You can also order pizza, if hunger calls. Admission varies.
A slightly under rated place to have a drink in Roscoe Village, the patrons here belong in the suburbs and act like they are just visiting the city for the night. The food here is a standard mini-pizza and when you are done, you can hoof it to the back room to watch a band play for a small or sometime not so small cover. But check the calendar because this place books every garage band in town. Pared down to its essentials, this is somewhere to go for inconspicuous crowd watching.
