When the guys of Tokyo Police Club first started playing together in 2005 they were students at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. As the band started playing around the city, they started to attract a fairly respectable following. When the indie, garage rock outfit was asked to play the Pop Montreal festival, they thought they were going to be picked up by a record company and signed on the spot. But It was not to be, the band played the festival but didn't get a recording contract. The band preserved though and managed to land a record deal with more and more touring.
For nearly a month around Christmas, the streets of the Lower Town twinkle with lights and echo with the sounds of carolers. You will find beautiful decorations, crèches, street theatre and dozens of Christmas trees; but if wandering the narrow streets leaves you chilled, make your way to the themed exhibits at the Musée de la civilization and the Musée de l’Amérique Française. Midnight historical dinners at the Plains of Abraham’s Martello Tower are also part of the tradition. Regular admission prices apply at the museums.
City and Colour is the pseudonym of Dallas Greene, who is also the guitarist for the post hardcore band Alexisonfire. The music that Greene makes under his City and Colour alias is far removed from the work he does with his other band, though. With City and Colour, Greene plays mellow acoustic folk rock. The group has had fairly good success in Canada--Greene's mother country--with a string of albums that have gone over well with residents living in the Great White North.
Asking Alexandria is an English metalcore band with roots in Dubai. After experiencing some success in its hometown, lead guitarist Ben Bruce returned to his hometown of York, North Yorkshire, gathered together some old friends and formed the massively successful incarnation of Asking Alexandria the world knows today.
San Antonio band Upon A Burning Body is a so-called deathcore band that certainly lives up to its name. This music is clearly meant to be listened to whilst sitting atop a pile of corpses, presumably after adding to the pile yourself. The fire that gets lit to the mass is where the band comes in, as their red-hot rhythm section is a blazing, relentless force to be reckoned with. Don't be fooled by the band's hardcore name though, they can sing like pop's most bubblegum-chewing acts, and won't hesitate to wax romantic upon the ashes of those they've destroyed.
